With the birth and development of the mechanical measurement of time, large-sized timekeeping instruments – bell tower clocks – replaced human beings in this role. Technological progress progressively miniaturising steeple clocks to pocket watches, and finally to wrist watch form. Nonetheless, the use of audible signals has consistently accompanied this evolution.
