Classic and Rare Rolex Watches Review
A range of classic and rare Rolex timepieces are set to attract collectors and watch enthusiasts alike as they go under the hammer at Birmingham based auctioneers Fellows & Sons on Monday 5th July.
The upcoming Wrist & Pocket Watch auction showcases some of the most sought after names in the world of watches highlighting a particular period between the 1940’s and 1970’s. It was during this time of innovation that the most desirable watches were created, often limited edition timepieces enhanced by complex movements and unusual styles.
The end of the Second World War saw a new and daring world of exploration and scientific discovery led by an extraordinary group of men and women. New professional activities such as deep sea diving, aviation and mountain climbing meant the 20th century intrepid adventurer needed a watch to match and Rolex became one of the leading manufacturers of premium watches which did much more than tell the time, making them the ultimate status symbol which we recognise today.
The Wrist & Pocket Watch auction will feature, a 1978 Rolex Explorer II, a rare Rolex Comex diver’s watch and a Rolex Oyster Milgauss.
The 1973 Rolex Oyster Perpetual Date Explorer II superlative chronometer is set to be a highlight at the auction with an estimate of between £8,000 and £12,000. Rolex had originally designed the watch specifically for adventurers and cave explorers, introducing more complex distinctions such as a 24 hour fixed bezel. This stainless steel 1655 model, with black matt dial and luminescent markers, is also one of the few Rolex watches which can also be used as a compass making it one of the first ultimate precision time pieces.
The Rolex Oyster Perpetual Milgauss was first introduced by Rolex in 1954. The Milgauss was designed as antimagnetic watch specifically for those who worked in power plants, medical facilities and research labs (like those in Geneva) where electromagnetic fields can cause havoc with the timing of a watch. The Milgauss in the auction has a green sapphire crystal and is highly sought after. Waiting lists for the watch are in excess of three years at Rolex agents.
The third watch of particular interest to go on sale is the rare Rolex Comex (Compagnie Maritime d’Expertise) Diver Superlative Chronometer with an estimate of £20,000 – £30,000.
This special version of the 1665 Rolex Sea-Dweller model was created for the French commercial diving company after they experienced a technical problem with a previous model. This special line of watch is suitable for some of the greatest sea beds with a depth rating of 2000 feet and was unique for its Triplock crown which protects the movement. This 1977 stainless-steel example displays the iconic ‘COMEX’ logo.
These legendary watches along with hundreds of other core collectables will feature in the Wrist & Pocket Watch auction starting at 11am on Monday 5th July 2010 at Fellows & Sons auction rooms in Augusta Street, Birmingham.
