The Omega Speedmaster GMT Solar Impulse fake watch has been announced at BaselWorld 2008 in a limited edition to mark Omega's support of the "Solar Impulse" Project, aimed at circumnavigating the globe in a solar-powered airplane. The Project may reach its goal as early as in 2009 - the first solar-powered flight is expected to last 36 hours. The Omega Company inspired by the idea of creating and utilizing safe and environment-friendly energy sources, has been providing the project with capital and engineering technology.

The Omega Speedmaster GMT Solar Impulse watch pays tribute to the prototype airplane. The case of the Omega watch, 44.25 mm in diameter, and the bracelet are crafted from Grade-2 titanium, together with the crown and push-pieces. The screw-in case-back features the engraving of the "Test Flight" inscription. The sapphire crystal is reliably protected from scratches and provided with anti-reflective coating on both sides for better legibility of the dial. The case construction boasts 100-meter water resistance. The watch is also available on a rubber strap.

The black carbon fiber dial of the Omega Speedmaster watch shows off recessed small seconds and chronograph sub-dials. The dial features centrap hour and minute hands and a chronograph seconds hand. You will notice the "HB-SIA" inscription at12 o'clock - it has been suggested by the name of the airplane - Hotel Bravo Solar Impulse Alpha. The inscription is in a distinctive ochre color echoed by the "Tachymetre Base 1000" printing featured on the matte black aluminum ring inserted into the titanium bezel.

One more unique detail of the dial is the central 24-hour GMT hand with an airplane-shaped pointer. The GMT hand, necessary for reading time in the second time zone, performs one rotation every 24 hours. It can also be applied for compass orientation. All you have to do is to point the hour hand in the direction of the sun - then, the GMT hand, adjusted to the same time on the GMT scale, will point to the north.

The dial of the Omega watch is characterized by perfect legibility achieved with help of white luminous hands and hour and minute indications. Chronograph displays are also very clear. The 30-minute and 12-hour totalizers are found at the 3 and 6 o'clock. The small seconds are presented in the sub-dial positioned at 9 o'clock.

The Omega Speedmaster GMT Solar Impulse replica watch accommodates the exclusive Omega 3603 caliber, a self-winding movement offering the precision of an officially COSC-certified chronometer. The vertically-coupled chronograph is controlled by a column-wheel. The free-sprung balance, fitted with the revolutionary Omega Co-Axial escapement for diminished friction, moves back and forth 28,800 times each hour, so the timepiece is capable of recording separate time intervals with precision to within 1/8th of a second.

Besides the chronograph functions and the additional GMT indicator, the movement of the GMT Solar Impulse also provides an easily adjustable date display.
